De l'art au Craft et viceversa' De l'art au Craft et viceversa'

Fashion object, luxury object, lifestyle object… What happens to the object when it becomes necessary to consume less?
The object becomes a manifesto: it reflects the materials, manufacturing techniques and the societal vision of its creators. It shifts from simply being a product for consumption to a "signal object."

Artis Facta

Lat. sing.
In English artefact, an item that has been altered, even subtly, by human action.

fig.1 fig.1

LEHERPEURPARIS presents ARTIS FACTA, a series of reflection exploring the evolving role of the creative Object in a post-transition world. The new economic, ecological, and societal challenges are pushing us to naturally prioritize, starting with the essential and then moving to the useful.

In this context, what holds value? Every object that is designed, crafted, sold, and purchased has an impact, but it also carries meaning: it can be useful to its user, showcase craftsmanship, drive human progress, or even stir emotions. For the first phase of this journey, LeherpeurParis turns to artist and curator Sylvia Sanchez Montoya to showcase her works alongside three artists from Mallorca's new wave: Marta Armengol, Sara Regal, and Claire O'Keefe, in collaboration with ADÈLE Collections, a design studio for decorative materials.

Through their lens, the object becomes a manifesto: it reflects the materials, manufacturing techniques and the societal vision of its creators. It shifts from simply being a product of consumption to a "signal object."

After completing a Master's Degree at ECAL, Switzerland, and participating in an artistic residence at the HKDI in Hong Kong, she began working as an interior and set designer for the Spanish brand Camper.

Currently, she works as an independent creative in the countryside of Mallorca, where she experiments with local waste materials to create recycled craft objects, while continuing working as a set and interior designer. Marta Armengol

San Cugat, Spain, 1988

Marta Armengol is an architect based in Mallorca and formed in ETSAB (Barcelona). In her work, through various disciplines such architecture, design, installations and sculpture, she plays with experimentation, and works in research and conceptualization of spaces and objects, using errors and material possibilities rather than searching for definitive solutions.

She believes that it is by mixing the boundaries between architecture, design, and scenography; between installations and sculpture or between the practice and research of architecture itself; that new ideas and innovation flourishes.

She has exhibited her work at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Matadero de Madrid, and the Dutch Design Festival in Eindhoven. She has also worked with the musician Rosalía and collaborated with a range of international brands, including the creation of the Four Folds series and other glass works for MANIERA Brussels or the interior design for CAMPER's brand-new concept store in Valencia and created a different range of objects for fashion brands as Lowe, Paloma Wool or Dion Lee.

She recently received the 'Rising Talent Award 2023' from Maison & Objet Paris and the 'Avenir 2023' award from Room Design magazine.

"I don't see inspiration as something that simply happens by chance, but as something that requires perseverance to emerge."

THE GLASS

The world of everyday things only knows transformation.
We are the existence that brings things together and gives them meaning. They contribute to our identification process. What surrounds us, helps us identify ourselves.

Objects such as a bowl or a spoon, which are used to deposit food and come from the concavity of the hands (the first bowl); a vase or a glass, which allows us to hydrate ourselves; a coat or a blanket, that collect the existence, tenderness and care of the host; a bed, which is related to motherhood or mother's hugs; or the fireplace which is the fire, the well-being and the home.

Delve into those objects and their symbolism, focus on what is not understandable or pure about them, their forms, utilities and materials; in order to create new readings.
As a continuation of this research, I decide to focus on one material: the glass, creating objects as containers for liquids & food, which helps us to hydrate and take care of ourselves.

WINE GLASSES

“The Wine Glasses” are 24 unique mouth blown glasses that due to their shape and form, make the user more conscious of the act of drinking.

Sylvia Sánchez Montoya

Colombian multidisciplinary artist rooted in Majorca, Sylvia is trained as a designer and works as an art director and curator, navigating the intersections of Art + Design + Craft.

Her approach is deeply focused on sensitivity and perception, the intrinsic value of material culture, and the non-verbal expression of ideas. Over the past 20 years, working in art direction for luxury and creative industries across Paris, Bogotá, and Barcelona, she has explored what has always been the core of her practice: the silent language of objects.

With her Moiras project, Sylvia embarks on a new phase in her exploration of design, positioning objects at the crossroads of art and experiences that can also be performative and spiritual.

The Moiras were the weaver goddesses of the fate of mortals in Greek mythology embodied by three sisters. clotho spun the strand of the newborn's life; láquesis turned the spindle, tying and winding the threads and distributing the fate; finally atropos, the oldest of the three, cut with her scissors the thread determining the end of life and the beginning of the next.

The Moiras are woven sculptures with an irregular warp of noble threads: living matter that is transformed through contact with the environment reminding us of the evanescence of things.

The foundation of each Moira is made with a wick of the previous one, drawing an interconnection between the whole series. Its weave without weft and without closure generates a vertical movement that connects the above with the below,—the celestial with the terrestrial. Its volumes create spaces within space, as dialogues between the inside and the outside —the personal and the universal.

The Moiras are both witnesses and bearers of time; they invite us to touch them, to move across them, to inhabit them; it is through that interaction that they are finally completed. So they breathe, they swell, they curl, they tangle, they fray, they degrade; and as they get older, they become more beautiful and even more alive.

The Moiras can be crafted in situ anywhere in the world, using local materials.

Series 1 was created on the island of Majorca, using hand-spun Majorcan wool, cotton from traditional Catalan mills, and Merino wool from transhumant flocks. Series 2, Edition Colombia, incorporated silk thread and banana fiber.
